    Tutorial 3& 4

Assuming that you have been appointed as the new CEO of Youtube, discuss in your groups answers to this questions.

What are the factors that lead to the extreme popularity of YouTube, especially with keen competition from other social network services like Wiki, Blogs and Facebook.

Youtube has several advantages over other competitors. First of all, Youtube provides video sharing which other competitors does not. Network services such as Wiki,Blogs and Facebook only allows user to input text or image post. Youtube however has taken everything else to the next level, with video hosting and sharing, it captures a wider range of audience.

The successfulness of Youtube can be seen clearly with MNCs using Youtube as a platform to reach out to their targeted market. E. g Nike uses Youtube to ad commercials about their products publicise their upcoming events.

The second key advantage that Youtube has is the interaction between people. Youtube allows all users who sign up to leave comments on any videos. This has led to a large numbers of artist, professionals and students to post their works so as to receive feedback and improve the quality of their work. Unlike blogs or Wiki entries, which are just meant for reading, providing little or even no interaction between the users.

The article discusses some downsides to YouTube. How would you deal with these issues?

The downsides that Youtube are facing are copyright infringement and privacy.

To deal with the problem of copyright I would suggest to sign an agreement with various companies so as to get consent to publish their videos or ads on Youtube. Furthermore those videos which violate copyright rules would be removed and the user banned from posting anymore videos in Youtube.

As for privacy wise, Youtube would have terms and conditions stating that anyone who feels that their privacy has been violated can contact Youtube.Youtube would then do its best to solve their problems depending on the situation.

What would be the future direction for YouTube?. Refer to the sections “Where is it going?” and “What are the implications for teaching and learning” for some ideas.

The future of Youtube is promising with users posting their own videos and companies making use of it to advertise their products and services. Youtube has also become a place for talent hunting, various singers have made use of Youtube and made themselves popular, one such person is Marie Digby, posted a video of her signing and has thus came up with a album with a music company.

Youtube also has a potential in expanding itself as an educational tool. Institutes can make use of Youtube to upload e-learning materials, as it provides free storage space, good bandwidth what’s more its free. Students can also make use of Youtube to do their research as there are videos on experiments and documentaries and even tutorials for them to browse.

Hence Youtube can developed into a very efficient resource tool in the future for any individuals to post their own video, do research and upload ads.

    Week 8 Practical

After browsing through www.talkingcock.com. I placed myself in different the following peoples shoes and try to think how they would feel after visiting this site.

    Singapore's Prime Minister:
If I were the Singapore's Prime Minister, i would definitely not be pleased after reading the content throughout the site as most of them make fun of politics as well as policies that the government have implemented.E.g Increase in the number of ERP gantrees.Furthermore the website also portray a very bad image of Singapore to others.

    A Singaporean:
If I were a Singaporean, my first reaction would be to laugh out loud at what the website has to offer and find for more interesting stuff in it.It would provide me with some laughter and jokes about living in Singapore and brighten up my day.

    A Foreigner working/studying in Singapore:
If i were a foreigner in Singapore, my first impression would be that many Singaporeans are unhappy with the way they are living in Singapore and that the government is very strict in enforcing rules in Singapore. However i might also find Singaporeans to be humorous as they can come up with jokes or parody's about things they face in everyday life.

    Week 7 Practical

    Wiki Entry

Topic: Impact of Integrated Resort towards Singapore economy
DONE BY: LESLIE SEE WEN JIN

    Introduction
Integrated Resort, a project by the government that has brought about much controversy. There have been people arguing from both sides of the coin as of why a IR should or should not be set up. Particularly from religious communities who felt that the IR which includes a casino would bring about negative social impact of gambling. Nonetheless, the final decision has been made and the IR is set to be completed by 2009 by Las Vegas Sands. The IR’s casino would also be its very first in Singapore.

Why the need to set up a IR?
The question that ponders people’s mind would be why set up a IR all of a sudden? The main reason why the government wants to set up a IR is to promote tourism in Singapore. The government hopes that with the introduction of the IR, it would attract a large number of foreign tourists to Singapore to boost Singapore’s economy. Moreover it would also create jobs in the service sector and result in huge spin-offs for tourism-related sectors of the economy. And this will benefit Singapore in the longer term. The large amount of new attractions that the IR can bring is expected to draw many tourist over to Singapore thus increasing tourism in Singapore.

    Summary of resource
As of now the IR project is still in its developmental stage and is set to be completed by late 2009.Despite all the criticisms and objections to the IR, many believe that the IR would ultimately solve the tourism problem in Singapore. There is much to be expected of the IR, including high class beach resorts and hotels, various entertainment centers as well as the casino. The IR is expected to attract 10 million visitors and bring in 15 billion tourism receipts by 2015. In conclusion although some groups believe the IR would bring about negative social problems such as gambling, however the government has responded by introducing schemes which forbid low income groups to enter these casinos and tight security is guarantee to ensure safety in the IR. Hence I give my firm support to the introduction of IR as it would benefit the country’s economy greatly and what’s more we Singaporeans now have another leisure area to go to.

    Evaluation
The source used is very detail as it provides a lot of valuable information of the IR. The website is actually a forum which allows individuals to share their views and thoughts of the IR. The particular member johnlo who post on the thread provides detail and relevant information of the IR.

He also includes pictures to support his sources. The pictures provide are also accurate as they have been extracted from Resort World at Sentosa: http://www.rwsentosa.com/. This is a organizational website hence the information is therefore accurate and reliable and it is frequently updated. The facts and figures provided are also valuable and up to date.

Overall, the website forum allows me to get a huge amount of information with realibilty and credibility from organizational websites. The different perspectives that i can get from different people about the topic also allows me to get a better idea of how the Ir would affect Singapore.
